Carrying your gun in your car
Travel with the gun in a
locked case of some sort. For pistols, the hard case the gun came in or one you
can get from any hunting/fishing section of the department store ought to work.
Hard cases for rifles may be the best bet, too.
Always travel with the gun
unloaded, and the ammunition carried in a separate case/piece of luggage from
the gun.
If possible, break the gun
down so that it is even less functional. For pistols, remove the slide; for
rifles, remove the bolt if possible.
If possible, seal the gun
in a compartment locked and as inaccessible as possible for the driver and
passengers of the vehicle. The trunk of a car is best.
When carrying concealed legally and via permit, it's
often considered "polite" to advise the officer that you are legally
carrying (he/she may already know you have a permit; many states share permit
info with their DMV and this info will be returned when the officer runs your
license). But with secured, locked, unloaded guns carried only for transport and
not accessible for self-defense, etc., you have no obligation to volunteer that
you have such locked-up guns in your vehicle.
